WHAT ARE
YOUR PLANS FOR
RETIREMENT?
Planning for retirement
can be a challenging experience for most as well as a dreaded one for some.
In fact, it's said, "some people spend more time planning a two-week vacation
than they do planning their retirement." Many of us in today’s society
are finding that we can no longer remain on our jobs for extended periods of
time due to the following variables, according to Elwood Chapman:
The downsizing of organizations causing the elimination of positions at all levels.
The reduction of officer and enlisted personnel in all branches of the military service.
Career disenchantment frequently caused by economic changes that force employees to upgrade their skills.
Relocation of personnel forcing a decision to move, find a new job in same location or retire.
Personality conflicts caused by realignment of management personnel.
Increased work pressure due to addition of new responsibilities. One manager holding down a job previously shared by two people.
Health conditions sometimes caused by one or more of the above.
Understanding the myths about retirement may help you plan for retirement and avoid unnecessary mistakes. Some of the myths as identified by Elwood Chapman are as follows:
The Retirement/Early Death Myth
The Piece-of-Cake Myth
The Female-Exclusion Myth
The Honey-Do Myth
The Hobby Myth
The Prior-Success/Easy-Passage Myth
The No-Challenge-Needed Myth
The Odd-Job Myth
The Sell-a-Little Real-Estate Myth
The Stay-Busy Myth
